Recall Mania:
Do Americans know real life from fantasy?

Schwarzenegger's "debut as the instant favorite in the race for governor of California only confirms the world's opinion of Americans" wrote Larry Derfner in the Jerusalem Post. "They like violence, power, revenge, riches, success and fame, and they don't know the difference between real life and fantasy, between real people and characters in an action movie.

As for their politics, it amounts to 'looking out for number one.' They don't have a society and don't want one. The world outside America's borders is irrelevant to them except as a threat or a target."  Defner also notes that "Bush also gets over on his image as a terminator, a blaster of bad guys, a man with a swagger, an action hero who delivers killer one-liners ('Bring 'em on!'). What are his politics? We're good, they're evil. Taxes are evil. Now did you get all that, or do you need some help?…From George W. Bush, then, it's just a half-step down to Arnold Schwarzenegger." …from the August 14th  Washington Post

"A moderate governor improved student academic test scores, built new power plants, approved paid family leave, enacted tough gun controls, protected old-growth redwoods and the California coastline, expanded Cal Grants for college students, raised the minimum wage, improved teacher training and accountability, expanded the Healthy Families medical insurance program, boosted investments in public safety and highways, restored relations with Mexico, preserved women's right to choose, approved a holiday for Caesar Chavez, increased rights for gays and lesbians and restored the eight-hour workday, "said Philip J. Trounstine of Gray Davis.
